My Day (in a nutshell)

Grant turned 5 in September and is in his second year at Peppermint Pre-school. It's seems as if he will be taller than me by kindergarten if he keeps growing at this rate. He is already eating me out of house and home and has endless, and I mean endless, amounts of energy.

Freddy is 4 months now, 15 lbs, and drooling like crazy. He's just getting the hang of playing with toys and puts everything in his mouth.

My morning usually starts with Grant hopping in our bed and asking a question like, "Have you guys ever wrestled a lobster?" At 7:00 in the morning it's hard to respond with words other than, "uh-uh." Then the conversation begins. "What if a lobster came out of the ocean and walked up the street and did back flips into our front door?" "Would you wrestle it then?" "I would, but I would karate chop his claws right off." Thus, begins the day of many many conversations about things such as this.

Freddy is soon awakened by the quiet voice Grant is using, and we're off to the kitchen for coffee and 3 breakfasts. While Freddy is playing in his saucer, I am quickly trying to get a pot of coffee made before Stu turns on the shower and I can't turn on the faucet for fear of scalding him. All I can think of is that first sip of warm coffee, sweet, sweet coffee, oh how I love thee.

By this time Grant has already begun to get out every toy known to mankind, and is wanting something to eat "right now!" I am quickly checking my e-mail to see if anyone has offered to come to my house and watch my children and clean while I treat myself to a day at the spa. Once again, no one has offered. Off to make Grant a pop-tart without crust and warmed up in the microwave followed by several bowls of cereal b/c I won't let him have chips or let him eat on the couch.

Freddy needs his diaper changed and has drooled all down the front of his jammies. Is my coffee done yet?

Stu is now out of the shower and looking for clean underwear. Can't he just look through the four laundry baskets of clean, folded laundry in the hall?

Grant now needs "fresh" water with ice and he wants the Spider Man cup with a straw, and it has to be a blue straw that bends. I'm checking my e-mail again to see if there are any more offers to help. Still none.

It's now 8:30:

Messes picked up: 4
Messes ignored: 23
Mouths fed: 1
Loads of Laundry done: 0
Bathroom breaks: 1 for Grant, 0 for me, 2 for the dog

I turn on the Today show b/c Matt and Meredith have become my only contact with the outside world, and Grant wants to watch Nick Jr. I respond by saying "no thanks," and finally pour a cup of coffee and put Freddy on a blanket on the floor to play b/c the saucer is no longer fun. As I bend down to pick him up Grant reminds me how big my bottom is.

I'll check my e-mail again in five minutes then start calling people I know.

This continues until Stu arrives home and I am either crying, yelling, or cooking dinner with a scowl on my face and bouncing Freddy on my hip trying not to get him too close to the hot pot on the stove. I know how pleasant this must be for Stu. He would turn right around and walk out the door if he knew I wouldn't chase him down and beg for mercy.

Grant usually greets him with a "Hey poopyhead," and a smack on the rear. To me this is not funny because I don' t think anything is funny at this time of day, but to Stu it's Grant's way of showing him he loves him and he's glad he's finally home.

After a dinner that is spent trying to get Grant to eat only 2 green beans, which he swears his mouth will not let him swallow, and taking turns holding Freddy so we can take turns eating, it's bath time.

7:45 pm:

"Grant it's time to get out of the tub. Pick up your toys and pull the plug."

7:48 pm:

"Grant, it's time to get out."

7:53 pm:

"Grant!!!" "Time...to...get....out!"

7:58 pm:

"I'm going to count to 3 and if you are not out of the tub I am going to take something special away!!"

8:45pm:

Grant is in bed and probably not sleeping but rather thinking of another excuse to come downstairs, and Freddy is actually sleeping in his crib.

Stu and I sit down and realize how exhausted we are. He asks for help with his homework and I oblige feeling guilty for paying no attention to him and not jumping into his arms the moment he walked in the door after work thanking him for working so hard so that I get to stay home with the children all day.

Two hours later we head up for bed, take peek at our adorable boys and crawl into bed. I usually lie there and think of all the things I should have done that day. How many more times I should have told the boys I love them, and then Stu says something and I drift off to sleep.
